Occupational Therapy for Child with Special Needs

Occupational Therapy (OT) for children is a form of therapeutic intervention that aims to help children overcome difficulties in carrying out daily activities, be it in terms of motor, sensory, cognitive, or socio-emotional. Occupational Therapy for children can be performed by an occupational therapist who has specific knowledge and skills in supporting child development.

  • Increases the range of motion of the joints: limitations/weaknesses in the movement of the head, neck, body and limbs
  • Increases muscle strength: difficulty adjusting balance ability (like walking like a bear) and maintaining body position against gravity
  • Fine motor delays: difficulty with writing and cutting skills, picking up small objects, and buttoning clothes
  • Difficulty doing self-help activities: difficulty getting dressed, dressing, brushing teeth and eating
  • Impaired bilateral coordination: difficulty using both hands to complete tasks (such as tying shoes, throwing/catching a ball)
  • Impaired visual perception: difficulty organizing visual information from the environment into tasks (such as putting together a puzzle)
  • Sensory processing disorder: difficulty adjusting the response to sensory experiences (such as touch, taste, sound and environment), which interferes with the ability to complete everyday tasks

Based on the results of the evaluation, the occupational therapist will plan a therapy program according to the child’s needs. The program will include a variety of activities and exercises designed to help children develop the necessary skills.

Occupational therapy will involve the child in a variety of activities and exercises aimed at developing motor, sensory, cognitive, or socio-emotional skills. For example, the child may do physical exercises to improve motor coordination, or engage in sensory play to increase sensory perception.

Occupational Therapy for children aims to increase the child’s independence, function, and participation in daily activities. Each therapy program will be tailored to the individual needs of the child. If you have any concerns or are considering occupational therapy for your child, it is advisable to consult a qualified occupational therapist for further information and advice specific to your child’s condition.

It is important to consult with a qualified occupational therapist to assess your specific needs and develop a personalized therapy plan to address your goals
